[TRANS] 100626 GQ July Issue – Interview with Lee Jung Mi (Who Played Mrs Weber in Mozart!)

Q. How do you find Xiah Junsu, having performed in the musical “Mozart!” together with him?

- He is really excellent. There are four main lead actors for “Mozart”, and amongst the four of them, he was the first to have memorized the lines, the actions and the lyrics. He was very hardworking during the rehearsals, and he always had this determination to want to give his best. A few days ago I heard he won the best newcomer award in “The Musical Awards”, and I was worried that people who have not seen him performed would say that “it was an award won based on popularity”. In the musical I play the role that antagonizes Mozart, but because (Junsu) was so outstanding in his acting, I even felt apologetic about having to oppose him. I told him before, that I hope he will continue doing this, and he himself also expressed that he wishes to carry on performing in musicals.

“Everyone must have a lot to say to us. We are very well aware of it. There are times when we cannot cry even though we really want to, so while we are standing here on stage, we wish to let it all out, to our hearts’ content, including what we have held back in previously.” That was what was expressed by the trio before the performance at Osaka.
“Then again, when we see everyone gathered in front of us, full of smiles on your faces, it might not be the right time to cry, and because we are blessed by your smiles, we would like to personally face everything with a smile too.” JeJung expressed to everyone towards the end of the performance.
JeJung and YuChun have appeared as actors before everyone through Mizuki’s <> and BeeTV’s television drama respectively, while JunSu has also released his first solo track <>. After having focused on their own solo activities for a period of time, the gathering of the trio caused a great excitement at the event.
Furthermore, mostly at the Tokyo Dome’s event, numerous big-scaled and rarely seen stage equipments were added, including the tilting runways and clear big screens at all corners of the stage. No matter where one was seated at in the huge auditorium, one could always see the trio clearly and up-close.
However, there was a trace of surprise on their faces as the platform started going up while they sung <<いつだって君に>> at the opening. During the MC segment, one could also see that they were quite nervous.
As this performance was only carried out through four sessions at two venues, Tokyo and Osaka, fans from all over the world vied for tickets for the performances. But through detailed accounts, we still hoped to let everyone, especially for the fans who were not able to make it for the event live, experience for themselves how spectacular the event were. Frankly speaking, though, what was more precious than the event was what JeJung was trying to convey through the words that he had spoken earlier.
In the opening of the MC segment, JunSu said, “If I am unable to sing again, then it would be no different from dying, so from here on I still want to continue to sing, for as long as I can, with all my might.” YuChun also said after that, “Having seen how everyone have encouraged us with your love, the only thing I can do is to work even harder, and I also hope that there will be even more a mutual understanding between (everyone and) us, and we are very grateful for how everyone has waited for us.” After this, JeJung honestly expressed his feelings by saying, “We are really thankful that so many people have attended this performance. From everyone’s perspective, even though we are unable to be by everyone’s side realistically, we are really grateful for this, just being able to have you sing together with us, smile with us and cry with us. We are also motivated by this, and we will work even harder from now onwards to reciprocate everyone’s love. Please continue to support us in the future.”
Probably (and I really mean probably) what the trio never thought of, was that the lyrics of the last song <> and the encore song <> really described what everyone felt, “Even though we are separated now/But because there is still a future to move towards/We do not want to lie to ourselves. Facing the future a step at a time/Forging towards the road ahead. Even though I cannot be with you now/But I will never ever forget you/I will always guard the place where you are/Just for that moment when we will be able to meet again. All the effort that I am putting in now/It is all because I want to meet you again.”
Such lyrics can be comprehended simply as lyrics of a love song, or lyrics that has a deeper meaning, but no matter what, what the trio can do now is to work hard and move forward, to prepare well for the activities from here on, to look ahead, to strive on. Is it not good the way it is now? To do what we can to help the three of them, and the future, whether if it is to the three of them, or to everyone who is continually giving them support, is it not filled with dreams and hopes?
Through the three hours while keeping this in mind, the trio also announced during the performance that they have decided to participate in a-nation this summer, and that the new tracks that they have performed will also be released soon. The trio also shared on stage later, in order to meet all the fans in Japan, they will work harder from now onwards to hold more live events.
A full detailed message will be released in the magazine from here on.

My ideal type is someone whom I can feel blissful and laugh with just by being together.

Revealing JunSu’s 20 Questions!

1. After going through activities with THSK, tell us how you feel about staring your solo activites!
JunSu: Rather than calling it responsibility, I rather call it a sense of fulfillment. I am really happy that I can illustrate the ideal world that I want in choosing the song, the direction of the lyrics et cetera.

2. What is the new image you want to express as a solo artiste?
JunSu: The sexy side of a man.

JunSu: Brian Kelly McKnight, Ne-Yo, Joe, Timberland

15.Where is the one place you want to go most on your first date?
JunSu: To Han River, or the beach or somewhere where there is water, I like to be near places with water. If it is in Japan, I would go to Odaiba or Yokohama. Actually, I do go to these places alone now when I need some peace and quiet.

[Trans] LEE Magazine July Issue – YunHo

“Even if anything were to happen, I want to be at the front protecting everyone.”

A man who is quietly passionate…

With their outstanding vocals and dance skills, THSK has not only set new records in South Korea, Japan, but all over Asia in the field of music. As their leader, YunHo made his debut as an actor in a South Korean television drama! He plays the role of a soccer player, and due to the upcoming World Cup, he has received more attention through his character. While we did touch on the topic of acting, he also shared some personal issues, his ideal marriage and his family!

I am very happy to be able to experience a normal lifestyle through a television drama…

Being the only Asian artiste chosen to partake in Michael Jackson’s (MJ) memorial concert event, along with his volunteer work and donations towards the victims who suffered from an earthquake in Haiti et cetera, YunHo has been receiving much more attention recently. Although he is only 24 years old, there is an unexpected sense of maturity. He is usually serious, and with his elegant facial expressions, he has showed many unseen sides of himself to the audience through this television drama!

“In music, you have to think of how to show everyone your best in three minutes. As an actor, however, you need a long time of interaction; you continue to act as you understand the surrounding atmosphere. I feel very happy as this is my first time experiencing [acting], and I feel [the character] is very similar to who I am. Even though I have never done this in my own life, but I am still as happy to be able to experience it through the television drama. Do I want a vacation? No, but it would be good if I have some free time, Bong Gun and I are those types who would constantly want to do something.”

The character he is playing, Cha Bong Gun, is a soccer player who once thought of giving up on his dream, but through an unexpected opportunity, he was given the chance to turn professional. What was shocking was that in every scene where Bong Gun had to display certain spectacular soccer skills, YunHo did everything by himself, without a stand-in.

“Not just in the scenes relating to soccer, but even in those dangerous scenes, I did everything personally. The people around me tried to persuade me out of it, but I feel this is something basic I have to do as a newcomer. My acting skills have improved a bit too, following the increase of Bong Gun’s life experiences, I also matured in my attitude. Initially, Bong Gun felt that he was unlucky in life and would give up on himself, but he eventually overcame any obstacle that he met. I feel true success is made up of 10% luck, and 90% effort. I also told my friends frequently that there will always be a higher mountain that the existing one [you may be facing]. If you can’t learn to overcome this [mountain], you will never be able to climb the next one.”

YunHo took some time to think through before he answered very politely and slowly in Japanese. That gentle voice really let one feels very comfortable with him. This is a big change from Bong Gun, who is constantly very harsh in his speech.

“I am usually like how I am right now too, I don’t speak harshly. But I do speak dialect sometimes when I am with my friends.”

The manager added, “In Japan’s terms, that situation would be akin to coming from Kyushu and speaking its dialect.” Has YunHo, who speaks dialect, suddenly formed an image of a Kyushu man? When asked if he was the “male chauvinistic type”, he laughed and denied as he waved his hands.

“Even though it is not to such an extreme degree…(laughs), but a man should always be louder in actions than in words, and he should always put responsibility as top priority. No matter what happens, he should always be in the front, protecting everyone while observing the surrounding situation. When I see my father, whom I respect a lot, I would have such a strong thought. My father has always been the leader amongst his friends, and he has been friends with my mother since they were students so he’s also quite a romantic. I really feel he is very amazing, to have found both friendship and love [in my mother].”

While flipping LEE, he looked directly ahead as he said, “My ideal family is one where I would feel happy just being together.”

“I want to marry at 30 years old. Although it is not a bad idea to marry earlier, but I would want to only do so after I have achieved my goals. While I do not have time to get into a relationship now, there will come a time when I will be in one. Having been a leader for so long, my personality is quite domineering. But when the both of us are alone, frankly speaking, I hope to be led [by her]. Yet again, when there are people around, I also want to be the focus of attention…(laughs). My ideal girl would be someone who can give me suggestions and guidance. I would want to wear the exact same outfit together with my [wife and] child, then travel around to different places together as a whole family.”

[Trans] Nikkei Entertainment July Issue – JunSu’s Part

-Even so, I, will still sing.-
XIAH junsu

As a THSK member, he has already spent five and a half years developing in Japan. JunSu, a member of the five-men group, began his solo activities using his full name on the 26th of May. This is an interview which will let you see his determination.

Vocal talents, ability to dance, good looks, these are some of the essential elements a South Korean boy band must possess, and to date, [these boy bands] have thrown the world into a unprecedented state of chaos. Without a doubt, JunSu is one of those causing this state of chaos.

Having a quality that no one else is able to imitate, he is thus able to gather the attention of the audience and put up performances that have been affirmed by thousands of people. The “voice”, which is a singer’s life-line, is an unsurpassed talent which he possesses.

Having gone through a difficult period when his voice was changing, the voice that emerged thereafter, if we were to describe it, it would be ”a hoarse yet high tone”. Fully displaying the limits of a natural voice, it has performed numerous beautiful melodies thus far. Within the list of songs the group has sung, the thrilling treble parts has been covered by this person many times.

This May, this person who possess such a voice, XIAH junsu, will be releasing a new solo work. His thoughts regarding the group’s future direction and his own cannot be fully comprehended through these songs alone. Let us try to step in and see what all it is about.

“Men, while they cannot not appear strong, there are also times when they want to show the fragile side of themselves. This is exactly how I want to present myself, so I tried two songs which has completely different styles.

The first track is the self-composed <>. There is an underlying meaning of “indulgence” and “yearning” in this track, and it’s a sexy R&B style track which sings about the basic instinct that cannot be suppressed. As this is a dance track, there is this cold suppression of the melody, and from within it highlights the hidden strength of a man.

The staff said, this is a track that has the same intense feeling as the previous work <>. Even so, I still wanted to try to change the entire atmosphere. After having decided on my solo activities, I wanted to present a more truthful side of myself. I want to present myself that can dance and sing live at the same time. In this track, I have placed in more emphasis on the R&B style, which is a style I personally like a lot. Most of the lyrics are English (it takes up about 80% of the entire song), and this is so that the overall effect of Western-style music is not undermined. This song required a lot of different means to keep the balance.

The second and third tracks (normal edition) is a collection of the traditional ballads. Both are focused towards the theme song of BeeTV’s television drama for mobile phones. One of the tracks is performed for the romance story in which fellow member YuChun is acting in. The other song <<>> is the theme song. The theme, which was somewhat deep and profound, was very quite interesting. I asked myself ‘this time, what is the significance behind the expression of this song’.

Even though this song is not self-composed, I chose it from amongst 20-30 other compositions. As to why it was chosen, one of the main reason was, it is quite a simple reason to me, throughout the entire song, from the start to the end, it is not purely about plain repetition of the melody and harmony, and it is not just about a single voice singing. To be able to put in one’s real feelings into the song, this was the part that suited me most. The lyrics are also very moving. In the later part of the song, where this is the line “Compared to the conclusion of happiness, changes have made me feel lonelier”, it touched me deeply.”

- Even if I am unhappy, I will suppress it-

“As a singer, I like this type of songs a lot.

To be able to express the song more vividly, I would think that the total absence of a single piano or guitar would be even better. That was the effect I was listening out for this time. Therefore, I chose this song. Even though it is sad, it also merged in the sorrowful emotions that have been suppressed.”

In his life as an artiste, the words “strength” and “sorrow” has memories attached to it. Especially now when he possesses the voice that “everyone wants to hear”, the issue of “the long period when his voice underwent changes” is also very well-known among fans. It is not enough to use the term “distressed” to describe it, and as JunSu would say, “That was a total despair”.

From the age of 15, it continued all the way throughout his second year in high school to the third. Even though the doctor said that “the duration for the voice change has ended”, there was still no improvement, and the hope of being able to sing seemed far away. Just trying to reach the higher pitches would make him exhausted and unable to produce any sound. While he had the desire to sing happily, gradually, however, he was unable to project any voice out. The doctor said, “You probably cannot sing anymore, stop singing”, and upon listening to such words, he would cry every night.

The trend of debuting at 17 years old is still ongoing in South Korea. The younger generation has always been made fun of numerous times while at work.

“I totally do not touch cigarettes or alcohol, and people usually ask, ‘Is it because you have a low tolerance of alcohol?’ I would be quite sad to hear this and think, so this is what you think of me, and there are times when I did not even want to explain myself. There were also people who said, ‘Can you sing with such a voice?’ However, after they heard me sing, they would be very surprised and say, ‘You can actually sing.’”

Generally, it is heard that most successful artistes would have had, at some time, gone through a period with memories of humiliation.
This will then become a source of motivation for them.
As for JunSu, he probably had such thinking, but after asking him, he said, “I don’t think I have had such hateful experiences. Because I have confidence in my singing.” Immediately, he revealed a dashing smile. To this person, confidence has already gotten victory over any hate and hurt, and that is probably why he is easier to understand.

After chatting so much, he was asked about his recording session at a radio programme and it was really bad (laughs).
However, his desire to stand on stage and sing became more intense.

During that period, he received a lot of letters from fans saying, “I like your voice”, and this has given him more confidence.
He commented, “See, it’s not that bad.”
During the period of the voice change, perhaps his efforts to force out sounds were not good for his throat.

“This was also probably why, my voice became, how do you say this, a bit weird, but it also made me unique. As I kept thinking like that, my voice gradually stabilized, and to me, it was nothing short of a miracle.”

Regarding singing, two years before, he was invited to a programme.
And that was in the year 2008, and that was his first time performing on Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

-A “Graduation Certificate” from his mother-

That was the first time his mother told him “I feel right now, you are at the stage where you don’t need me to give you anymore guidance.”

“My mother has always wanted to be a singer from a long time ago, but due to the vehement objections from my grandfather, she never got the chance to fulfill that dream. Because she is someone who can sing, so whenever I make a mistake in singing she would know. When everyone around me was complimenting me and saying “well done”, in actual fact, I was the only one who could grasp my mistakes, and my mother would always discover it too (laughs). ‘Why don’t you try singing it like this?’ she would always provide a lot of guidance.”

“There are four members in my family, including my twin elder brother.”

His elder brother, Junho, is a fraternal twin, and in spring this year, he has begun his own activities in China. I heard that for their mother who never got to fulfill her dream, she would hum songs as she does household chores, and when she is able to rest, she would sing as she plays the guitar.

“I learnt the method of pronunciation from my music teacher, I also learnt on my own accordingly. However, on learning how to involve emotions into the song, a lot of it was influenced by my mother. Our way of expression is basically similar (laughs). I have learnt how to use vibrato in singing since I was in primary school, and it was because my mother used to always do so, and I felt that was very impressive. I didn’t know then that that was a sort of technique. In school when everyone else was singing, the people around me couldn’t do it, and I was trying to figure out why they weren’t able to.”

With a mother like that, both her sons eventually became professional singers.
I heard their father sings very well too, but he ranks last in the entire family (laughs).

Which is more tiring, a dance track, or a ballad which requires no dancing?

[Intoxication] is a very intense dance track. Here, we tried asking “Dancing and singing at the same time, compared to singing a ballad which requires no dancing, how different is the level of fatigue”.

“That is a good question (laughs). The answer is it’s basically a different situation singing a ballad, there are times when it can be as tiring as singing a dance track, it’s wrong to say that it’s not tiring singing a ballad.” JunSu explained.

“Ballads is where everyone has to focus completely on the song, there are a lot of places in the expression of the rhythm, melody and song which you have to pay attention to.”

His method of singing, which requires him to give in all of his energy, is definitely a good way to burn calories. If you pay attention to this while trying to listen to him sing, it will definitely be more interesting.

In January this year, he made his debut on the musical theatre stage in Korea in the play “MOZART!” as the main actor.
Just based on singing alone, the experience has extended till now, and those who had performed had also commented that it was a complete change of style.
Despite being termed as Asia’s TOP singer, he still went through with it.

“It was tough. POPS who usually sing, even though the voice might break sometimes, as long as the emotions were right, the expression of the song can still be performed as well, right? But if you were to put such emotions in the musical theatre, it will be a complete NG (laughs). If you wish to express something extraordinarily, you first have to understand the lyrics well. Also, you must change yourself to become the role you are playing in order to sing it well.”

“To date, I have done a lot to express myself, but to express emotions as a completely different person, I have never done it before, so I really learnt a lot from this experience. Therefore, I want to participate in new performances increasingly, and develop further in my emotions. In the past, I knew very little about musical-related songs, and I rarely listened to them too, but I have been listening to more lately. I am very happy when I find that ‘there is such a nice song!’”.

While he continues to build up on his experiences, he continues to sing.
He’s only 23 years old.
Beginning activities as a solo artiste is only the “Second Chapter” of his life, and JunSu, who is quite sensitive towards the arts, has a bright future ahead.
Lastly, as someone who is able to sing as well as he does, what training did he go through in order to reach such a standard?
Upon hearing this question, he made a “bu-chi” sound as he burst out laughing.

“I have talked about this a lot, a lot (laughs). But what is worth mentioning is, there’s nothing impressive about someone who has had a wide range [in terms of vocal range], what is impressive is when the singer knows how to control the range well. In the songs that I have sung, what is most important is being to immerse yourself in that emotion. I don’t know the full range or limits of my vocal range, but it doesn’t matter. I always think that if I don’t work harder, it won’t be enough. Really. There is no 100 marks in music, but I want to work hard to achieve 99 marks.”

A face without make-up is more aggressive? Lyrics which are animalistic gives off a stronger emotion?

“Even though the songs that are prepared are not many, but there are a few,” JunSu said. “[Intoxication] was chosen from amongst the three works.” What grabs people’s attention are the lyrics, from the start of “Kill and touch me baby~” to “Bite me”, “Pulling off and leaving our clothes” et cetera are very animalistic words. It is very hard to imagine JunSu, who often pulls off gags in programmes saying such words, but such a change is something definitely to keep a lookout for.

PRIVATE TALK

Q: What did you eat today?
A: Bento! I really like Japan’s bento. If there is soup included in the bento which I buy from the convenience store, I would be very satisfied. The ramen is also good. But I stop eating from 6PM onwards. Rather than say that I’m dieting, why not say that it is a form of self-discipline, which I am now keen on.

Q: Are you still not able to drink?

A: I drink about 5 cups a year. If my heartbeat is too fast, I would be in a bad mood.

Q: If so, then under what circumstances will you be able to drink then?
A: Usually during an award celebration dinner. I don’t want to spoil the surrounding atmosphere (laughs). I would usually drink a bit of red wine on the plane or in the hotel. Sometimes it helps me to sleep better after drinking a bit of alcohol.

Q: Who sent the latest SMS to you and what did it say?
A: Elder brother. He said that he will be going to China next. He was in Korea recently, but he’s going over today. We have a very good relationship.

Q: What is the one song you listen to frequently in your iPod?
A: [All I Ask Of You], it is in German. In order to imagine my performance on stage, I also listen to my own songs frequently.

Q: Which Japanese artiste do you prefer and which song?
A: Ayaka-san’s [Minna Sora no Shita]. Ayaka-san is really very powerful.

Q: What have you bought recently?
A: A bag and wallet. I haven’t bought a bag in 3 years, and a wallet in 5. Even though I am not thinking of changing, but some of the fellow artistes help to choose (laughs).

Q: If you were to give a girl an accessory, what would you give?
A: Er~~ Necklace.

[Trans] KBoom July Issue – JeJung’s Part

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

A complete report on television drama “Sunao ni Narenakute” preview meeting and conference!

You don’t know their appearance, nor do you know what kind of person the opposite party is. However, why do you feel as though he is always by your side? It is probably because of that person’s ‘gentle’ words. This is exactly what takes place in the television idol drama “Sunao ni Narenakute”, which describes the process of how a group of five young men and women met through Twitter, became real friends before becoming partners. The screenwriter for this drama, Kitagawa Eriko, explained her reason for using Twitter as the theme, saying, “I myself uses Blog and Twitter, and through language, people are able to connect with each other. Youth groups are like the life-line of a student’s life, hence, it can also be signified as a partner, that is why I used Twitter as the theme for this work.”

Please say a form of greeting to everyone.

Eita : I was really grateful when everyone came down specially while my leg was in a bad condition. You would probably understand by our current atmosphere; the five of us were still in the midst of filming last night actually. We filmed the drama within a very harmonious atmosphere so the filming was done very smoothly. To be able to be involved in this drama that is featured every week, and allow the audience to look forward to the next episode each week is really a joy to me.
Ueno Juri : I’m Ueno Juri, and I’m playing the character of Haru. I am really happy to be able to be part of the group of five to act out in this drama. My heart is racing now because I have not watched the first episode, the director’s performance was also very natural, and when I noticed it, I started tearing so I was able to display the feeling of sadness. I used very natural emotions to act.
JeJung : Hi everyone, I am JeJung. I play the role of DOCTOR in this film, and I am unusually excited today (laughs). I am very grateful to be able to be here today. I was very nervous initially as this is my debut in a Japanese television drama, but because everyone who were involved in the film were very kind towards me, so I thoroughly enjoyed the entire filming process. I have not watched the first episode too, so I will be very happy if we can enjoy it together.

Seki Megumi : I’m Seki Megumi, and I play the part of PEACH. This is the first time I have been casted as one of the main cast in a drama and I will give my best effort. On the grand scenes of the filming, I will also determine to give my utmost best .
Tamayama Tetsuji : I decided to take up this drama about half a year ago. I did ask myself what kind of feeling do I want to bring about? After one or two months have passed, I told myself initially that I only have to act out the part where I suffered from sexual harassment at work (laughs). There were also other enactments, and my heart was lifted up higher and higher after hearing all that (laughts).

Share your thoughts [after having watched the first episode]

Eita : I really want to watch the second episode (laughs). Even though it is only fictional, the momentum and atmosphere of the drama is very good, I feel it is very dashing.
Ueno Juri : I discovered many scenes of depression or heaviness after reading the script, but there were also moments of happiness. It is the same for the other characters. I know the script, and it felt like all five life stories were progressing at the same time. There are a few scenes that left a deep impression on me, but the one that left the deepest one was probably then the five of us saw the Tokyo Tower turn green at the same time.
JeJung : It was very refreshing (laughs). It was very refreshing just seeing myself in a Japanese drama! I would feel like “Is this guy really JeJung?” (laughs) It was very interesting watching the first episode! I was very curious about the scenes of the others. In LINDA’s scene, it was so intense that I burst out laughing…(laughs)
Tamayama Tetsuji : Everyone watched it together at the resting room, and when it featured the kiss scene between me and the editor, I heard JeJung, who was in the next room, go “NAHHHHH!!” (laughs) But JeJung had seen the script before, so he knew about the details.
JeJung : But seeing the image…(laughs) It was really interesting though!

You had water poured over you from the start, and you still had to take care of your younger sister, it looked tough…

JeJung : Yes…however, DOCTOR’s character is such that no matter how tough it is, he would be able to get through it with a lot of effort and hard work. He has always been so from the start.

DOCTOR really likes HARU.

JeJung : Yes. That is why he envies NAKAIJI a lot. Every time DOCTOR meets up with an obstacle, he would think of HARU. However, NAKAJI always has HARU by his side…

What are your thoughts towards Twitter?

JeJung
: Even though it is interesting, I have never used it before… It looks like something you will get addicted to once you start using it… (laughs)
